Sedentary women may gain deep abdominal fat after liposuction

Posted on by drj

The body essentially stores fat in two compartments: deep and superficial. Superficial fat lies in the space between the skin and muscle layers and is commonly targeted with liposuction. Deep fat, otherwise known as visceral fat, surrounds the abdominal organs. It cannot be targeted with liposuction and is generally thought to be unhealthier than the fat that lies just below the skin. Deep fat is closely correlated with Diabetes and heart disease, unlike superficial fat.

A new study out of Brazil looked at 36 women who underwent abdominal liposuction, all of whom had been sedentary prior to the procedure. Half of the women started an aerobic exercise regimen after surgery, whereas the other half maintained their sedentary lifestyle. Four months after surgery, all of the women had flatter tummies, but those who remained sedentary experienced on average a 10% increase in deep fat. Those who began aerobic exercise did not experience an increase in visceral fat.

In the U.S., about 204,700 people underwent liposuction in 2011, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Based on this study, and clinical experience, it’s important to remember that liposuction is not a treatment for obesity. Staying active after surgery is the key to maintaining optimal results.

Woman fakes cancer to get Breast Augmentation

Posted on by drj

Mesa, Arizona

A woman faked having breast cancer so she could have her breasts augmented, according to police In Mesa, Arizona. Last year, the woman, 27-year-old Jami Toler, told her co-workers that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She allegedly claimed she would need a double mastectomy and immediate reconstruction with breast implants. Toler said the surgeries were going to cost nearly $8,000 and asked her friends and family to help raise the funds. According to police, her friends and family held fundraisers to raise the money, which was then deposited into her account.

It was only when Toler returned to work and couldn’t provide a doctor’s note for her medical leave that the staff became suspicious. Police examined her medical records which that did not indicate any form of cancer, but confirmed her breast augmentation. This week, police arrested Toler at her new job at a car dealership.

Dallas Chin Implant (Chin Augmentation) – the “Chinplant”

Posted on by drj

Have you ever thought about having a stronger, more chiseled chin? If so, you are not alone! Recent data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons revealed that chin implant placement (“chinplant”) is the fastest growing plastic surgery trend in the United States. This rapid increase in chin implant popularity has been seen in men, women, and all age groups. It’s thought that the increased popularity of chin implants is the result of increased usage of video chat technology, an aging baby boomer population and the perception that a weak chin impairs success in the workplace.

Chin augmentation is a relatively straightforward procedure. A small incision is generally made below the chin, allowing for placement of a solid implant. The procedure is usually done with the patient under anesthesia, though it can be done with some mild sedation.

To learn more about chin augmentation or other procedures, contact Dr. Sam Jejurikar of Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute at 214-827-2814.

New silicone breast implant receives FDA Approval

Posted on by drj

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration has approved Sientra Inc.’s silicone gel-filled breast implant for breast reconstruction or augmentation in women aged 22 or older, the agency said news release dated March 9th.

Similar silicone breast implants made by two other manufacturers (Allergan and Mentor) have been on the market after receiving FDA approval in 2006.

Approval of the Sientra silicone breast implant followed rigorous clinical testing involving 1,788 patients. Adverse reactions included tightening of the skin and soft tissue surrounding the implant (capsular contracture), asymmetry and infection.

As a condition of approval, Sientra will be required to follow patients for seven additional years, and to conduct a 10-year study of nearly 5,000 breast augmentation and breast reconstruction patients to see if the implants are associated with diseases including rheumatoid arthritis and breast cancer.

Look for Sientra silicone breast implants to become available for breast augmentation in Dallas, Plano, Frisco and the surrounding communities in the upcoming months ahead.

East Texas woman released from hospital after fraudulent breast augmentation

Posted on by drj

Here’s yet another cautionary tale about the need to find a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform your cosmetic surgery.

An East Texas woman who spent more than two weeks hospitalized after a bogus breast augmentation procedure has been discharged. Officials say Sheena Bradford left a Longview hospital on 3/5/12 after being treated for an unknown gel injected into her breasts. For a period of time prior to discharge, her condition had been listed as critical. Her injections were performed by a beauty shop owner, who, at this time, has not revealed the substance she injected into Ms. Bradford’s breasts. The beauty shop owner, Carmel Foster, has been arrested for practicing medicine without a license and is currently being held on $200,000 bond.

Yet again, make sure your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. That way, you will know that he or she has undergone the necessary training and is qualified to perform your cosmetic surgery.

The official 2011 statistics of cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States were just released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Although not a traditional indicator of the state of the economy, just as unemployment rates and the stock market saw improvement in 2011, so did the numbers of cosmetic surgery cases performed in the United States. Nearly 14 million procedures were performed last year, up 5% from the year before.

The top 5 procedures performed in 2011 were:

Minimally invasive procedures also saw an increase in 2011, up 6 percent. The most commonly performed minimally invasive procedures were Botulinum type A toxin injections (e.g. Botox, Dysport, etc.), soft tissue fillers (e.g. Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse, Sculptra, etc.), chemical peel, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion.

Take advantage of special savings on Juvederm

Posted on by drj

Juvederm is one of the most popular injectable treatments performed in the United States. Areas commonly treated include the lips, marionette lines (nasolabial folds), eyelids and cheeks. Results are directly related to the amount of filler added. Nonetheless, patients sometimes settle for a less than optimal result because of the cost of obtaining more Juvederm. If you are one of those people, take advantage of Dr. Jejurikar’s February special, available at both the Dallas (Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute) and Plano (Legacy Plastic Surgery Institute) offices. If you call in the month of February to schedule your appointment, you will be eligible to take advantage of special savings on Juvederm, with the price of the second syringe half off the price of the first!

For more information, do not hesitate to contact Dr. Jejurikar’s office at 214-827-2814.

Nicotine patches and gum do not help smokers quit for good

Posted on by drj

Nicotine and tobacco addiction is a major problem for any patient looking to have elective cosmetic surgery. As I tell all my patients, the risks of healing complications are significantly higher in smokers, particularly for operations that require lifting up of large amounts of skin (such as facelift, breast lift, tummy tuck, etc.). Patients often time seek help to quit smoking before surgery, turning to such treatments as electronic cigarettes (e-cigarette), behavior modification therapies, and medications such as Chantix or Zyban.

Treatments that have been frequently used as well are nicotine replacement therapies, including nicotine patches and gums. In a study published yesterday, researchers from Harvard found that two-thirds of patients who quit smoking resumed smoking within four years, even when used in conjunction with behavioral modification. The study looked at nearly 800 patients and found the same relapse rate in people who used no smoking-cessation aids.

While the results of the study are certainly discouraging for patients looking to quit smoking permanently, the do not contradict the very real short term effects these products can have. Patients may be better off utilizing other forms of therapy, particularly medications such as Chantix and Zyban.

Restylane is now FDA-approved for lip augmentation

Posted on by drj

Medicis Aesthetics, the manufacturer of Restylane, announced on October 11 that Restylane has now received FDA approval to be used for lip augmentation. Although Restylane has been used extensively for lip augmentation, doing so was considered an off-label indication. Restylane, a hyaluronic acid dermal filler, was first approved in 2005 for mid to deep dermal injection for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, and has been used off-label for lip augmentation.

An FDA advisory panel had previously voted 6-0 with 1 abstention that the benefits of using Restylane as an injection for lip augmentation outweighed its risks, and that the filler was safe and effective for this indication. The panel reviewed the results of a study of 135 patients who received Restylane and 45 patients with no treatment. Almost all patients (99%) experienced adverse events, which included bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, itching, and skin exfoliation. Of those who were treated, 15% experienced adverse events (typically swelling and tenderness) that lasted more than 15 days.

Restylane and Juvederm are the most commonly utilized hyaluronic acid fillers in the United States. To learn more about treatments with Restylane and Juvederm, contact Dr. Jejurikar’s office at Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute at 214-827-2814.
